Film homage, 1910's, Newsreel, Johnson-Jeffries fight, July 4th, 1910, poster in store window, Tombstone, AZ, 2004

"The Incomparable Prize Fight" still resonates today. Jim Jeffries (1975-1953) lost over 110 pounds to face Jack Johnson (1878-1946). He is much heavier here than on July 4th. "The Great White Hope" was roundly thrashed as he went down in the 15th round of the scheduled 45 round fight.

"The Great White Hope beaten, humiliated. The betrayer of his race," as spoken by the announcer.

They spent much time in clinches in this footage.

Boxing is theater, which needs an eager audience. The ever resourceful Thomas Edison soon realized this.

The first boxing match filmed was staged in Edison's "Black Maria" studio in June 1894. The tar paper covered studio was mounted on a revolving track to follow the sun.

Annie Oakley (1860-1926) visited the studio five months later.
