Writer/Poet Linda Joy Burke

sb-800?
Cool. This actually gives you a clue as to how much brighter the surrounding (non-shaded) scene is!
Writer/Poet Linda Joy Burke by strobist.
Photographed a very nice poet in Ellicott City this morning, using two SB-800s - Lumy SB-III key and a Ray Flash fill. We were working about two stops over the ambient in this shot.

Thanks, NM. I am happy with it because this was exactly the palette I saw in my mind when I was setting up the light. Dropping down the (shade) ambient made it look cooler. Then a 1/4 CTO on the key popped her out a bit.

The light from the Ray Flash was straight -- no gel. Her shadow side would have gone to black without the on-axis fill.

I'd love to know more about the ringflash technique - did you TTL this or have it set to manual I wonder?
I have one, just haven't used it much and would like to see a tutorial for balancing it with other strobes as I don't think it adds a whole bunch on its own.
Plus I'm always worried it's going to break off - particularly if I try and shoot in portrait orientation.

Conor-

I will be writing about this one in the future. I used manual, for exact control. This RF model does not even fit the D3 I was using, so I just PW'd the flash and used it with the flash on the bottom of the ring. Worked fine.

Thanks for commenting on why you used the Ray Flash. I really like the mellow feel of this but was curious to why you used that. Now that I look at the shot more closely, I see why.

I would like to see more about the softbox, I am holding off buying a ezy shoe from lastolite. You have caught her bohemian side beautifully. The ambience balance with her being warmed makes her feel sympathetic.

As for what a Ray flash I dont know anything about, will you be covering that in the future?

Thanks for sharing

Great shot, I like the subtle CTO effect, just enough to warm her skin a bit. Nicely done!

Gorgeous. Did you choose the ringlight as your fill because it offered some general softness, or is there a more specific reason to use it in this context?

I zoomed in to 4260 x 2673 using "All Sizes." Look at her eyes at that (amazing) resolution. There is no on axis catchlight from the Ray Flash. There is a faint bluish highlight above and to the left of where it ought to be if the Ray Flash was around your lens. I'm thinking you were holding it off axis.

Not that that detracts from the shot at all...

Le da un relieve a la modelo espectacular. quizá la trancisión entre árbol y casa, quedan en un mismo plano, seguramente era buscado! saludos!!

I was reading about this technique, and thinking "where on earth have I heard this before?" Then I remembered that you had mentioned this at the L.A. meet. I thought I was either psychic or losing my mind. Lovely portrait.

David this shot is just.. imperfectly damn good.
By looking at the image in photoshop at full size, it "seems" underexposed if you look at the luminosity histogram (a couple of stops!). Also 100% cropping the model's face, it doesn't "seem" perfectly sharp, I mean it's not carved in stone, but..

What does impress me is that in the end the photo is just very smooth and pleasing and damn good (imperfectly). ;)

This is a great portrait. I am just curious why you didn't balance color temperature between the natural light and the artificial light? I notice many still photographers don't match color temperatures and its something that bothers me as one who works with motion picture photography as this would be seen as a "special effect" or a mistake. Anyways the frame and light looks good, I am just curious. Thanks.

I tend to use warm vs cool a lot as another layer of contrast between a subject and the rest of the photo. Just personal style, nothing carved in stone.

David
To be honest my eyes are being puled to windows demanding my attention and it’s hard to move away. The reflection on window is the sharpest part in composition
David was the window the main subject??
Did I miss something here??

You know, I didn't like this at all when I saw it on Strobist, but now that I see a larger version of it, I like it a lot, I think it's great! I'm not sure if it's just the size - I think the dark background on Strobist might have something to do with this.
