Homeless

Homeless by David Russell.
No political statement here, so don't misconstrue. I just found the shot intriguing. I probably could have framed better.

Sean, I might. I saw the America theme a while back and thought, "Man, I live in DC. This should be a piece of cake." As much as I love this photograph, I worry a bit about the politics of it. To me, it's not derogatory to anyone—homeless people or the President. But I fear that others' perception of the image would be more political in nature.

What do you think? How does it make you feel?

It tells a story -- but you're right, that story might invoke some political discussion(s).

Me? I feel like it shows the (harsh) contrast that is life in America. To me, this is a clear picture of how inadequate a nation's political power is to meet the needs of the individual; even a nation as great as the United States of America.

Thanks for the response. Your reflection on the image is really interesting. It's also similar to what my dad mentioned to me when he saw it, although Dad also saw some really interesting spiritual parallels on humanity and distance from God.

I think in the end what I realize is that each individual will perceive or interpret this photograph in their own way. I need to learn to be comfortable with that.

Not sure why you are convinced this is a political fence straddler. If you examine a bit closer, the person's, I'm assuming guy's, clothes are nearly spotless. His shoes, unlike the homeless I run into in my area, are shoe lace free, as if they were just out to the store & back, the blue jeans are nearly spotless. The vest & blue shirt appear newer & the person's belongings are not numerous or threadbare or in several bags as one sees with many homeless people.

I do see a small bottle which may or may not be alcohol, a white cloth used as a pillow, & something unclear between the two. Is it possible that this person is not wanting to wait in a line of job applicants & has decided to get there early?

Of course we all will make our own conclusions, I would just say that we should not assume, without question, what this picture represents & finally to title it without bias, unless you are absolutely positive. Without such a title perhaps the political pressure subsides some.
