Elephant Matriarch

Elephant Matriarch

I shot this from quite low down (two inches off the turf) last November in the Masai Mara in Kenya. It's an older female elephant, possibly an matriarch of a nearby elephant family on Paradise Plain,in the Masai Mara.

A robin in the snow

A robin in the snow

A red robin from an excursion down to the front garden during the snowfall last weekend in London. Different from the usual fare I normally post, but equally rewarding. A nice picture for Christmas!

Male Mara lion

Male Mara lion

I think a lot of people who visit Africa for lions like to have their own picture of a lion head-on as did I, and this is my take. There’s nothing in Africa so intense as a lion looking right at you.

Wildebeest banking on the Mara River

Wildebeest banking on the Mara River

Wildebeest can bank up for hours before crossing a river, or they can bank up for hours then just walk away, testing the patience of those of us who stop to watch. This time, our wait was of about half an hour before one took the plunge, whereby the remaining thousand or so followed.
