Thief

Thief by daveknapik.
Some of you may notice that I try to upload a photo a day. I didn't ever expect that photo to be a mosaic of CCTV still shots of the guy that stole all my camera gear.

My wife and I came home last night to discover that our home laptop was stolen along with our Nintendo DS Lites and all my camera gear, among several other things. It's a very long story and I won't get into it here, but I will say that because we couldn't see any signs of forced entry, we have reason to think the thief may have had keys somehow.

The kind people at the media agency across the road let us inspect their CCTV footage today. We scanned nearly 12 hours of it and have our prime suspect now.

I've arranged these in chronological order, from 12:53 to 13:02 (thousands of pounds of kit in under 10 minutes... impressive cunt isn't he?). Note how he enters the road carrying one bag and leaves with two. The new bag uncannily resembles my camera bag, the Lowepro Slingshot 200.

I know the detail here is horrible, but it's all we have. If you think you can somehow identify this person from this, please let me know.

Have a look at the person that ruined my month. Thankfully I have contents insurance on my flat and the claim process is moving along already. I'll probably be without a camera for a month though and that kills me. I've drifted (some may say stumbled haphazardly) among many artistic passions in my 34 years, but photography is the one that I've stuck with the longest and which has spoken to me the most. I feel terrible.

UPDATE: I've geotagged this photo so you can see where it was taken (Pratt Mews, London, NW1, UK) if you click on the "map" link to the right.

Thanks, Chitetskoy. As I've been studying Krav Maga for a few months now, I would rather have the opportunity to see the thief face my fist. And my feet. And my knees.

So sorry, Dave! That is terrible. But thanks to technology, hopefully you can catch this guy and get your gear back (or just prosecute the hell out of him anyway).

sorry to hear that Dave... years ago I had all my gear stolen from my studio, twice.... but actually that wasn't nearly as bad as when our house was burgled and they only nicked a TV and a VCR... it was the invasion of our private space that was so upsetting... needless to say, you'll never see your gear or the burgler again... but you never know

Thanks everyone for your kind comments and words of consolation.

I've edited down the footage a bit and posted it here: screencast.com/t/n1F1BW5p

I'm not very hopeful I'll see the stuff ever again, but I would like to see this person apprehended. My wife aptly noted that this is Vigilante 2.0. Hell yeah! :)

It may be worth showing this to your local Cash Converters. I know a few people who have had their car broken into and things stolen from there having luck with not only getting their stuff back but from getting satisfaction from delivering their own justice.

Any success finding out who it could be? This is a case for Veronica Mars...oh right, she's just a fictional character :*(

Another Partial Success  Pro User  says:

That's just so shit. My wife's flat was burgled in an almost identical way when we were living in London - no sign of forced entry and in and out before you could say thieving shithead.

The fact that somebody clearly had the key sent her insurers into a frenzy of trying to wriggle out of the claim but they did pay up.. but not after asking for receipts for everything - something they didn't ask for when they took her money for the policy and something which is always a tad difficult when it's for jewellery which was a present 20 years ago.

I'm no detective but if this guy does have a key the chances are he'll be back to try his hand in another flat... also means he's probably local. May also be worth trying the landlord and/or any maintenance companies which have been around in the last year or so.

Hope your stuff turns up and hope the thief comes to justice.

P.S I've got a compact you can have for a lend until your replacement comes if that would be any use.

Thanks, Jon, and thanks for the camera offer, too! Pete already came through for me and I have one of his cameras now. I'm astounded by the generosity both of you have shown me. Thanks so much, you guys rock. :)

Insurance is being a bit of a bitch, and yes, they hammered me for all sorts of receipts. Luckily, I do most of my shopping online, and I never delete anything from my email (yay gmail!) so all I really had to do was search my inbox and make PDFs of everything. For my Macbook Pro, luckily my credit card company was able to offer a statement from the month of purchase.

Now it's just a waiting game, really. The evaluations company has the receipts and they said it will take at least a week to evaluate this claim. (Funny that, it took me an hour on Amazon only!) Then they'll have the evaluator speak with me and they'll outline what they're replacing each item with. If I'd rather replace any of it myself, they'll give me vouchers for the appropriate shop (e.g., Apple Store vouchers, Jessops vouchers, etc.)

I can't believe that this cocksucker did 10 minutes worth of work and it's cost me hours upon hours. If he's ever found, he had better hope it's by the cops and not me.

Sorry to hear about the theft. This guy certainly doesn't look like he's bothered by the fact that he's just robbed someone - this is definitely the only suspect you have? Fingers crossed he gets his come-uppance then. Git.

We're 99% sure that's him, JR, and it's all we have. We're not going to find him. That wasn't my intention in posting this, really. I post a photo a day generally, or I try to, and this summed up that day better than anything I could have snapped.

If you burgled flats regularly, you wouldn't look too bothered either. Looking like you belong where you are is key to pulling it off.
