This is great. I wish there were a way to
make the specialists skyscrapers instead, but
that's just because of my claustrophobic fear
of dark places/underwater.

Depth-first vs. breadth-first search. But I'm
not sure I'm convinced by the metapher --
take an specialist for the yellow line
instead for one of the stations. In that
case, s/he doesn't dig deeper, but knows more
about the details of the yellow line, i.e.
the fractal dimension of that line becomes
greater, more details become visible, but the
three other lines become invisible or fade
away. But of course that's not so easily
visualizable in just two dimensions ...

Ooh, I like the idea of the skyscrapers.

I've heard design consultancies talk about
"T-shaped" people (that can
navigate both horizontally and vertically),
but I like this representation better. 3
dimensions always beat 2.

I posted some thoughts and suggestions on my
blog:
www.eekim.com/blog/2007/08/20/generalistvsspe
cialist
They are similar to tillwe's comments in
that both the horizontal and vertical
dimensions should be depicted as networks,
which would give the diagram more of a
fractal property. However, I also think the
differentiation between systems versus linear
framing is a good one.

@eekim: but that would only make it
less-readable! (I suppose...)

Why is the range two dimensions and the depth
only one? Maybe this chart has a generalist
bias. ;-)

I always think the primary value of the first
drawing is to give people something to react
to. This turns the visualization process from
an individual process to an iterative group
process.
These are all great thoughts and they have
sparked some ideas. If I have time I will
attempt a second version that incorporates
some of this feedback.
