So I guess you can be both, a specialist in a particular area but a generalist in others?

Wow, this is getting spooky ... I am literally wrestling with the specialist or generalist career path. Right now I am the consulting generalist: tech, creative, PM, GM, client executive, blah, blah ... and lamenting some deep background in a particular subject matter area (I have working in TV, movies, healthcare, telecom, government, ...). This image summed up my career challenge in a nice simple way. Maybe the next step in my career should be XPLANE!

mtbdeano -- could be! We like people with multidisciplinary backgrounds. You can check out current job openings here.

Great insight, Dave. I've been trying to tell this for people in years. Your pict helps a lot! "Wisdom of Crowds", a book by James Surowiecki, goes deeper in this discussion about the two roles.

Can you send me a higher size of your picture. I want to show my interactive team all about it! Thanks, and congratulations again.
