dadmade horizontable

dadmade horizontable by davegraphics.
another crazy dad construction. this time based on my basic concept. y'see, having a fucked up back means drawing can be excruciating at times. one of the few positions that is actually GOOD for my back is laying on my stomach with my back arched (kinda like when you're watching tv on your stomach with your chin in your hands). trouble is, after about 30 minutes your shoulders and neck get exhausted, plus you can't slide huge pieces of paper under yourself like you would under a table, onto your lap. this thing addresses all those concerns. the adjustable chest angle thing supports your shoulders, the padded piping supports your head, and the whole thing is on a superwide frame that's lifted about 1 inch off the ground. BRILLIANT. and for added appeal, mom upholstered all the padding in the same world war II airplane fabric that she made my son's little duvet case out of. no one on earth could guess what this thing is for. AND it's equally good for drawing, and for working on a laptop... (oh, just one minor thing- it doesn't actually... uh... "work"-- because i keep sliding down it and the chest angle needs to be an arch, not just a flat plain. ...but here's the best part: dad will probably keep at it during each yearly visit till it's flawless.)

That is great! I've a bad back, too. Weights have helped, though.

that's a great adaptation. i have to either draw at a table or while stretched out on my bed, on one side.

our miserable human bodies, won't we ever be rid of them?

I'm with postbear here. Our bodies are so unsuited for modern life, we should evolve ^_=

Wow! All you need now is some sort of weights-contraption to exercise your legs, a coffee machine off to one side (and a straw) and you can spend all day there...

This reminds me of a sailmaker gizmo(SDJenny-- these guyz DO have a hole in the floor; complete with a built-in industrial sewing machine.)

Anyhoos, sailmakers use a sort of sling/hammock that hangs from a roller track on the ceiling.

... A rock climber's bivouac sack on a track. :-) Mike

I used to have back problems.

I started running, doing weights and in general losing weight.

I hope you try this, your solution is not really addressing the real problem!

jlms, yes i've been meaning to try your solution. i'll get to that right after i polish off this next dozen boston cream donuts (i use them as the "bread" for my bacon sandwiches). but in the meantime, i'm designing this really neat robot suit from which i can work, sleep AND jog. i'm also working on a way that i can shit in it without having to wipe myself.

Just found all your great photos here- and this one struck a nerve in me ;) - Lately I've been having some neck problems, and I'm taking some glucosamine which seems to help me a bit. - And I'll try your donut and bacon sandwiches which will obviously feed my creativity..

I like to draw in this position and also like to lounge around a lot on the computer in the same position. So i have chronic upper back and neck problems. I tried jlms solution - lift weights with a personal trainer (who is paying special attention to my back and neck issues) 3 days a week, now running upwards of 30 miles a week, lost 20 lbs (i was not super fat to begin with). Started this last year. Now i feel healthy and strong (its fun to be able to bench press kozy) and I feel like i can do anything - except get rid of this nagging upper back and neck pain. My trainer says i should go see a chiropractor (who will no doubt tell me to stop leaning over while i draw or work on the computer).

Healthy living is the cure for a lot of things, but certainly not everything. And it cannot necessarily counteract the long periods of bad posture that can be required for drawing and painting. jlims doesn't know what he is talking about.

I suggest you quit making your beautiful art - now that would address the problem! :P Although i think the idea of this contraption is pretty good too...
