Female March Moth at the White Cart, Renfrew, Renfrewshire. Mar 08 2012.

This female, like many that emerge when its cold, lack wings and is unable to fly. The 'paintbrush' on the end of its tail helps to distinguish it from similar female winter-occurring moths. You could mistake it for a tick, as it's just about 5mm long.

Yellow Dung-fly shines like gold in the early morning sunshine at Finlaystone Pond, Finlaystone Estate, Renfrewshire. Mar 08 2012. Temperature was just 6ºC but this and a few midges were about nonetheless.

This is me, striking a heroic pose on the hills beside Cruachan Reservoir. Mar 05 2012. Not simply a vanity project, I wanted a self portrait to illustrate a website in construction to promote my biodiversity recording services, including BBS, invasive species registry, biodiversity plan management, GRI Index reporting, EMAS production and, of course, stock image library. Plug, plug.

Male Chironomid spp, possibly Sergentia coracina, with typical front leg posture and fancy feathery antennae. This non-biting midge was swarming in large numbers on the banks of Loch Awe at Cruachan Power Station on Mar 05 2012 – my first dipteran of the year.
