Arctic Freeze

Arctic Freeze

Courtney Hammond '11 discusses a photo with students at her "Freeze-up" exhibition in the Russo Gallery in Haldeman Hall. As a Steffanson Fellow through the Dickey Center, she spent three months in Barrow, Alaska working with school children as a community outreach intern for the Barrow Arctic Science Consortium.

"Freeze-up" is series of images and text that track the change in season and formation of ice from September to the end of November in the coastal Arctic community of Barrow, Alaska, during the fall of 2011. As the ocean transitions through its annual process of freezing into a solid winter surface, community members reflect on the rapidly accumulating changes in this physical process and what it means to their community.
