a ding dingHere's what I know about this ring, based on what my mom has told me. In 1968, she was in New York City visiting her father in NYU Hospital; he had had a stroke (well, stroke-like damage from occlusion of the carotid arteries on both sides, actually) that left him partially disabled for the rest of his life. Her aunt Regina came to visit. Though she had raised my grandfather after their mother died, they had been estranged for years. She told my mother that she had something she wanted her to have, "reached into her bosom" (my mother's words), and pulled out a handkerchief pinned there. Unfolding it, then wax paper, then tissue paper, she took out this ring, dirty and smudged, and handed it to my mom. That was it -- she didn't explain why. When my mom got it home, she cleaned it up and saw that it had diamonds and was quite a nice ring, but never learned more about it from her aunt. My mom offered it to me sometime last year, and I asked her for it in early September, if I recall correctly. She had my dad bring it to me a couple weeks ago when we (my dad, brother Pete and me) were at the Jersey shore for a 'mancation' with my uncle and cousins. Uploaded on Oct 11, 2009 |
