Photoshop's Photomerge is indeed pretty good,
but I've found it has trouble with more than
a handful of images. At the recommendation
of your old article, I tried out Autostitch,
but eventually settled on Hugin which, while complicated at first is quite
good an dI've used it with as many as 25
images without any trouble.

What software do you use for making panoramas?

I used to use the free but temperamental Autostitch, but now I just use Photoshop's "Photomerge".
It does a great job in full-auto mode on even quite sloppy collections of images.
