2011 0923 Greenhawks v Whitehawks

by Dan and Rachelle

By Greenhawks Head Coach, Jim Gagen: It was a big week for the Greenhawks coming off a tight game the previous week and the Whitehawks up next. In what figured to be another exciting game the Greenhawks were glad to see RB Chris Cooke coming off the DL and put in a good week at practice to get back in the lineup.
The defense knew they were going to have their hands full with the potent running attack of the Whitehawks so they put in extra preparation all week capped
by running drills around the practice field.
The start of the game seemed like a stalemate with neither team moving the
ball very effectively. The Greenhawk QB Mikey Carlsen was heard calling multiple audibles at his center Sam Morsics and lineman Nic Morsics and Lars Krabbe in Peyton Manning fashion in an attempt to catch the defense off guard. The RB's Jesse Bratman, Johnny Eaton, and Chris Cooke had multiple runs that burned off lots of yardage but couldn't seem to find the open field as the Whitehawks defense swarmed. With 30 seconds left in the half the Greenhawk QB belted out another
audible changing the coaches play at the line but this time resulting in 60 yard TD run by RB Trenton Burrows thanks to the line play of Andrew D'Agostino.
In the second half, the Greenhawks defense was pleased to have a 6-‐point cushion but knew no lead was safe. The front line of Joseph Cardella and Blinn Atchley swarmed at each handoff pulling multiple flags often for losses. In one TD saving flag pull, CB Lucas Butler dove for the flag as the Whitehawks had penetrated through the defense stopping the Whitehawks on the ½ yard line on a crucial 4th down play. Then what seemed to be a sure TD for the Whitehawks as their prized runner was streaking down the sideline, safety Bryce Gagen made chase from behind eventually getting the flag in a final diving effort.
As time ran out the Greenhawks 6-‐0 lead proved to be enough for a win in this hard fought battle. The Greenhawks were exhilarated to learn that they had secured a 1st round bye in the playoffs secondary to their hard effort put in during the latter half of the regular season. After the game, the Greenhawks, like any hard-nosed football team were found partying on the sideline with vanilla cupcakes and popping straws
into their juice boxes in celebration of not only their win but D-lineman Blinn Atchley's 7th Birthday. It was a late night, but a good time was had by all.
