Here's the making of youtube video (better watch it on high quality):
www.youtube.com/watch?v=SchHq5XxemA
I hope, you enjoy :-)
tech:
Each a green-gelled flash through the small windows and my selfmade
torch-design flash shot into a white panel in front of the model for
indirect fill.
The cinemascope reflection was made in post.

More info on your flashlight mod!
~Danish (44 months ago | reply)
Thx Tom,
I'll gladly tell you about the flashlight mod. What would you exactly
like to know?
Anyway, I can tell you that I used a ~30 years old hanimex flash.
I added a variable output function- for that you need a flash that has a thyristor circuit with photocell(thats mostly called "Automatic Mode").
I located the photo cell and bypassed it with a variable resistor(I think it was a 22kOhm).(and completely darkened the photo cell.. just in case if I wanted to built it back).
BTW: This hack can be used for highspeed photography, too- as you can extremely short down the flash duration.
Be very careful though! That hack can be extremely hazardous if you touch the cap at loaded status. Use a high-resistance resistor to unload the cap.

Dan

Great info, and I loved the YouTube version of the shoot. (The motion graphics were cool, too).

hey, thx man :-)
will try to make more of this stuff.

Saw your video on the strobist site and just had to stop by to say nice work and congrats on the PW's. I'd love to know how much post went into this. The video shows 3 frames at the beginning, I assume the difference between shot 2 and 3 is the raw version and post version?
I just ordered some of the Hong Kong triggers and hope to become a bit of a strobist myself. I'm looking forward to them working... sometimes. :) Has to work better than CLS, I've NEVER gotten CLS to work.

@podsix
Matt,
thx for your comment :-)
Yes, you're right- the 2nd was the raw image. The first one was just one of the vast amount of miss-triggered shots btw ;)
Actually, I spent about 15-20minutes on post at this shot. After levels-correction I applied a curves adjustment layer to increase contrast. Then I just burned and dodged here and there a little. My aim was to create a high contrast and dirty looking image.
Then of course I added the scope reflections and the 16:9 letterbox.
Hope you'll have fun with the GI Triggers. Actually, this was of course the hardest thing you could do with these triggers as there was much mesh wire around and some thick concrete wall.
I won't diss these triggers anymore, although they almost drove me nuts on this shot ;)
They're the best or even better solution for that price.
regards,
Dan

Nice photo! Love those gasmasks.
I wonder how you did the torch? Somewhere at sometime you mentioned a 'resistor for variable strenght' or something similar, and I am keen on doing a hack like this.

thx, Sameiden.
As I answered to TomJanz earlier on that:
"Anyway, I can tell you that I used a ~30 years old hanimex flash.

If you need more help- then just send me a flickr-mail and I'll try to help you :-)

Thanks! I seem to be at least partially (selectively?) blind :).
Sad to see that the mod is that easy :). I have a bunch of flashes, cheapo ones, without the possibility to change the power of the flash. I was hoping that you had hacked something like this, so that I could use my strobes usefully, other that just dimming them with a ND-filter, which works, but feels stupid... Especially my Vivitar 336 seem to have potential, as there is a 'hi/lo'-switch but by opening it I have learnt that it is a too complicated object.
The quest for a flash with a photo cell begins!

@Sameiden
I have't tried them but the Metz 30 BCT 4 seems to be really good to mod :-)
@yell
thanks for inviting- I added it but the funny thing is that I can't acces the channel as flickr blocks viewers from germany ;o)

Thanx a lot, Phil :)

What is the music? The photo looks great! Enjoy the PWs. I would really like to know where I can find this track.
~Danish (41 months ago | reply)
Hey thanks :-)
The music is the instrumental version of TI's song called "Motivation".
You can listen to it on youtube as well :-)
greetings,
Dan
