A deliberate experement by a colleague.
Decided to save EVERYTHING to the desktop and just use finder and spotlight to browse files.

Makes me cringe just looking at it, but it worked and produced this very interesting image!

LOL. This can tend to become an art if seen from a different perspective. Anyway, this is the exact opposite of my desktop -- I hate anything on it save for the wallpaper that is there by default. :-)

I've done this before. But because I have snap to grid on, the new icons just end up piling up in the upper right corner. On Leopard, it's worse, because you can't pile them up somewhere else to look for something.

Mac has a pretty cool search tool called spotlight, this guy saved everything to his desktop in a disorganized mess and just used that to get to his files.

My desktop has 10,825 items on it. I juggle a bunch of user experience content at the office, after a while having things in piles and using spotlight is as easy and faster than wasting time keeping "organized"

It actually forces you to use spotlight or better methods. I remember a while ago they did a study that found people who had messy paper all over their desks were much faster and "organized" than people who kept their desk areas tidy.

don't they say not to keep too many icons on your desktop because it tends to slow it down ... and wouldn't you have to remember the names (to some extent) to be able to find what you need in spotlight? ... i mean ... holy crap.

@ Ben Jacob: You can do that on a Mac, as well as easily changing dozens of other options about how files are displayed - this person just chooses not to.

Just goes to show you - no matter which OS you use, there's always someone out there that will do something silly to it for attention and those that will ballyhoo the mess.

I once worked desktop support and an administrative support person called us because they thought their hard drive was getting full. I got there and their desktop (win95 at the time) was littered with documents like the image - I asked why - the answer? "Well the hard drive is almost full, so I started saving stuff here..."

It gets better - I also noticed that there were tens of documents in the recycle bin and asked if the user if it was ok to get rid of them - "No! I was saving things there too..."

I'll swear on a stack of Bibles that it's true...

I'm taking this approach lately as well. I'm not saving everything on my desktop or even in the same spot, but I am saving all my pictures in just the Pictures folder, all documents in just the Documents folder, etc and then using Spotlight to find what I need rather than making some multi-level hierarchical mess of folders.

any new operating system can do this osx isnt god
linux has tracker
vista has instant search
i mean technically you can put google desktops on xp so it can do it as well.
Though, you do have to member names of the files and if you forget your kinda screwed.
though i like the picture anyway! i'd go crazy

Strange, when I save a lot of documents to the desktop, they just start piling up in the upper right corner when the screen is filled.

Oh and wasn't he ever unable to find a file because he forgot the filename?

When you're done with the experiment and want to quickly delete all of those files use Terminal to do it. (under the assumption you can't drag all of it to the trash)
