Facade of the Gannett Newspapers building at 55 Exchange Boulevard.
The home of the Democrat and Chronicle daily newspaper. The building
was fashioned after the Pittsburgh Press building and completed
construction in 1928. The site at Broad and Exchange was chosen
because a railroad spur, located 15 feet under Broad Street, would
enable delivery of newsprint right into the building. Tracks run for a
few miles underground in the former subway bed which was built in the
old Erie Canal. These tracks were used until 1997 when the Canal Ponds
print facility was completed in the town of Greece.
