Document Snowboard Mag Front Cover: 50th Special Edition!!The shadow from the bare flash telling were that flash was, but the red one was something like on the camera? Just some reverse engineering :-) I would say it was here shooting back at the camera with a gel. The red light is visable here and does give that rimlight, I think you might be right!
Heres the night powder shot of Vans rider Will Hughes, that is on the cover of this months Document Snowboard Magazine.... Their 50th special edition no less. I don't have the PDF of the page from the mags art director yet but will post it as soon as I do.

It was shot in Morzine/Avoriaz, France, over New Years but Ive had to hold back until it was in print. Check out the mag at Borders, WH Smith, etc, I have some more images throughout as well. Shot with two strobes. One camera right, bare, the other centre frame, gelled red. Shot 10 frames and this one was the best. - Heres one of the test shots, I posted a month or so ago... www.flickr.com/photos/danmedhurst/2181249154/ _______________________________________________ Edit: As asked for by Mr Hobby on Strobist. Wow! I've just logged in and its been going a bit mental round here today! 4000 views and counting. Thanks for your kind words everyone. I knew when I shot it that I liked it, and that I hadn't seen another snowboard photo like it so far, but I didn't think it would get this kind of buzz. Its all been real positive from the people at Doc, Flickr and The Strobist folks. So thanks everyone, its all very heart warming. :O) As for the nerdy details.... It was shot at about 8:00 at night, up on the side of the road just down from the bottom of the lift station and it was proper freezing. -16c I think?? We had already been back to the apartment in Morzine to get a few extra layers of clothing on and thermos of Tea so when we arrived we were all set to go. I had already tried some test shots the day before so I knew what I needed to do. I had Ian Ashmore, one of the other snowboarders helping me and he stuck on a modeling light for me as Will flew into shot - this helped me to see what was happening and focus on the action. I had the strobe centre frame on full power (as you can probably tell) and the other on camera right on about 1/4. I told Will to kick up as much snow as he could in front of the flash as possible - hes been a pro for about 10 years so it was nothing tricky for him. As for the set up we basically shot a frame then hiked across 5 or 10 meters to do the next one, each time making sure we didn't mess up the snow. If you look at the top right of the shot and left middle you can just see the track from where I was stood shooting the previous frame. I think this was frame 8 of 10 and once we had this we did a couple without any gel (see the magazine article), had a cup of tea and called it a day. Im gonna stick some more snowboard shots up from the trip now too. Let me know what you think - although I think this was probably the most interesting.....
