Almaty (Kazakhstan) - View from Koktöbe![]() ![]() Almaty (formerly known as Alma-Ata) has been the capital of Kazakhstan until Nazarbayev lifted it to Astana. Nevertheless, it's still the most important city of Kazakhstan and even the president still resides there, as well as most of the embassies. New, luxurious flats are currently being built next to the Koktöbe hill, as there are many "New Russians" (or "New Kazakhs") living in Almaty. You'll discover much more expensive cars on the streets of Almaty than in Zurich.
