My Favorite Shaving Cream - Discontinued!

My Favorite Shaving Cream - Discontinued! by Daniel Greene.
Edge ActiveCare Shave Cream has been discontinued. I am sad and frustrated because it was the best shaving cream I've used in over a quarter of a century. It is rich and creamy, helps the razor glide across my face and slice through my beard, rinses clean, and leaves my face feeling calm and moisturized! It's not drying or sticky the way so many other shaving creams are. And now it's gone! My husband loves it too, and this is our last tube of it. I looked online, and you can't even get this stuff on EBay anymore. (Someone was selling it for $10 a tube, but they ran out. Someone else was selling it on Amazon for $14 a tube, and only had 5 left as of last night.)

But there is a sliver of good news. I called S.C. Johnson & Son just now to verify that the product had been discontinued and to request that they start making it again. They told me that the product was, indeed, discontinued in March, but they also told me something great. When they discontinued it, they bought it back from retailers so they could sell it by mail order to customers who loved it enough to call and ask about it. And they're not selling it for $10 or $14 a tube-- they're selling it for $4 a tube plus shipping and handling. I just bought four cases, six tubes per case! The shelf life is two years, so that should last me and my husband for the next couple of years or so.

Sure, I could buy a bunch of cases and sell it on EBay for a profit, but I'm going to do loyal Edge ActiveCare customers a favor: just call S.C. Johnson & Son at 800-558-5252, tell them you wish they would put Edge ActiveCare Shave Cream back on the market, and order a case of six for yourself while supplies last. No, I am not employed by S.C. Johnson & Son. I just love this product and want to get it back on the market. Selling it on EBay for a profit is not going to accomplish that. Sharing this information with fellow customers and asking them to call, voice their demand for the product, and order it from the manufacturer at an affordable price just might do the trick! (And it couldn't hurt my karma, either.)

P.S. I blogged this.

Judging from one of your recent self-portraits, I'd think you wouldn't be having much use for this stuff anyway. :-)

Seriously, I understand how you feel. I never used this myself, but am always looking for the perfect shaving cream. One of my all-time favorites was the menthol version of Gillette Foamy, which I discovered during my mission and used regularly for many, many years thereafter. It was discontinued several years ago, and I still miss it.

Incidentally, I use a shaving brush now, which hasn't always been true. In February, 2001, I had surgery on my right pinky finger, and bought the brush to help me shave while I was recovering from the surgery. But I ended up liking the brush so much that I have been using one ever since, as part of the daily ritual.

I would have never thought to call the company. That's great that you will be able to get some.

I've used soap, but it just doesn't do as good at lubricating the razor or soothing / moisturizing my skin. I've never tried a brush; I might try that.

I've posted a setup shot that shows how I photographed this product:

In this part of the world (New Zealand) you can't get any of the flashy shaving creams. The one that I managed to find which is superb is from King of Shaves and it's really good. Highly recommended, and they don't pay for the ad ;)

Thanks for the link, Erez! Yours is the second mention of King of Shaves I've read in the past 24 hours, and I'd never heard of it before that! I might just order a tube of the shaving cream and try it.

hi, daniel. you're not alone-i like this shaving cream, too. i noticed it might be going bye-bye when i saw it on clearance at a walgreen's in nashville. i liked the smooth shave i got with it, but i had a tendency to use way too much, and before i knew it, the tube was empty. so i stopped buying it. i tend to overdo it when i shave, thus i end up using copious amounts of shaving cream when maybe i only need a little, but i guess i'm wasteful that way! you are mighty resourceful in the way you procured more of this product. if i liked a product as much as you like this shaving cream, and found the company was phasing it out, i'm sure i'd call the company, too!

I just wanted to say thank you! My husband was totally bummed about this product being discontinued. He thinks it makes sense they would discontinue it because a little bit goes a long way and one tube lasts forever....probably not a great profit ratio for them. Anyway I was able to call the company today (mid Sep 2008) and order a case of 6 for him. Thank you so much for sharing this information - you have made him a happy camper!

I am in no way affiliated with the company. This product, has been re-packaged and re-introduced along with the "Edge Infused" line. Not all the varieties are available, just the Aloe. I have seen the new packages at Target.

I really like the "King of Shaves" line of shave creams. Not the shave gels, the cream in a tube. Edge just copied the idea from King of Shaves. You can buy them online from their store at kingofshaves.com or maybe Target might still carry it. They are really very good.

I am sure Walmart or other stores that don't carry the edge infused in a tube will tell you they have never heard of it. It is available. Just keep up the pressure asking when they are going to carry it. They will eventually relent and stock it.
