Flag at Half Mast for Whom?

Flag at Half Mast for Whom? by Daniel Greene.
I couldn't believe the City of Phoenix would fly the flag at half-mast over the death of William F. Buckley, so I Googled it when I came home. All I found was a letter from a senator in Oklahoma stating that their state has a bill requesting that all city agencies fly flags at half-mast on the first day of each month in honor of veterans. As soon as I read that, my consternation about honoring a conservative pundit was replaced by a somber sadness about war and the lives lost to it.

Let us not forget that we are engaged in a war that is ending the lives of many Americans, Iraqis, and Afgans-- and ruining the lives of their families. Okay, maybe ruining is not the right word in every case; I'm sure there are many brave family members of veterans who refuse to be ruined by the absence of their loved ones. But it still saddens me greatly for everyone involved, and I wish I didn't feel so powerless to stop it.

Thanks, Dale. I'm glad you appreciate it. I can only guess that the City of Phoenix has a similar practice to the state of Oklahoma, particularly here in Steele Indian School Park right behind the Veterans Administration complex.

Maybe they just didn't raise the flag back after the half mast proclamation for the death of Evan Mecham.

Don't you think it was in honor of the former Governor of Arizona?

I really hadn't thought of Mecham since he died almost a week prior to this, but you may be right about that.

Thanks for mentioning and sharing this with me, Daniel! :) I think the funeral was on the Saturday after.

I couldn't go to the funeral because I can't bear to watch people talking and sharing stories. I still don't know my parents' or my grandparents' stories. I did not want the reminder how separate I am from my own family if I attended those kind of family functions. I know my family members are good people.

For the fans of Daniel Greene who are not aware of my background and to help them understand my statement above, I am the only Deaf individual in both sides of my family and often miss out the dialogues between family members. My family do not sign ASL. Even if cochlear implants and hearing aids are an option, those would not bridge the gap I have between myself and my family, ever.

Again, thanks for taking the picture!

Thank you so much for the info. It's Friday night, almost 10:00 PM, and we just drove by the park and noticed the flag and were curious. I googled" why is flag half mast over Indian School Park" and up you came. I love the internet! We had thought that maybe a year had past since the helicopter crash. Anyway thanks again for the looking into that, It was a curious sight, especially since the flag a 1/2 a block away was at full mast. Have a great weekend.
