Signs of Life
LARGE View for the signs of life!
My dear friends, as you might have noticed, I am not very much active on flickr those days! However, this morning I managed to wake up at 4am, then drove to the desert to shoot the sunrise, the morning temperature was 22 C, almost feeling cool! (in Dubai it still goes up to 34 C during the day).

GEO Magazine, German edition, October issue

I had the great privilege of having one of my Burj Dubai shot published in the October issue of GEO magazine, German edition. Unfortunately, I have no idea what this article is all about! ;-) May be one of my German flickr friends could tell me! ;-)

Burj Dubai - the world's tallest house
Burj Dubai stretches more than 800 meters into the sky over Dubai. Interview with chief engineer Andy Davids who has calculated the static of the tower and who is already planning new records.
When asked if it's possible to build taller buildings, Andy Davids replies that he's already working on the planning for the Nakheel Tower in Dubai which will be more than one km tall.
He doesn't think that's the limit though. He and his team are working on a building which is three times the height of the Burj Dubai. A 120 years ago, the newly Eiffel Tower was almost twice the height of any building built up till then.
With buildings almost two and a half km tall what gives you the largest headache? You'll need an oxygen supply starting at about 4000 meters. The internal air circulation is one of the problems. Also the external effects on the structure. The climate affects the wind so that has to be taken into consideration.
How do you obtain the necessary data? We use the most exact climate models which we get from NASA among others. Furthermore, we use the so called SODAR approach to calculate the wind directions and speeds. The Burj Dubai swings by only about a meter at the top. With taller buildings we have to take different swing widths into consideration. This is a challenge as we have no experience in this or anything to compare to.
Do you see any limits? The limits are not technical but monetary. (He goes on to say that a builder would want to see a return on investment within 10 years and therefore he figures he can build a building about twice the height of Burj Dubai - maybe even three times the height within those 10 years.
When asked how many people work on the design of such a building, he replies that he employs 50 people from all over the world. The team is working on the construction and design of 10 buildings with 100 or more floors contracted by Dubai, Katar, Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia.
The models for this are still made from wood. When the contractor comes with a new idea the model can be changed in a few minutes.
