I know it's cliche, but I use LOTR characters. However, I use only minor and/or non-fellowship characters (Rosie Cotton, Tom Bombadiil, Gaffer) rather than the usual Frodo, Bilbo, Sauron, Gandolf, etc.

I used to use trigonometry terms: Sine, Cosine, Tangent... but i'm transitioning to terms from Gibson books: GentlemenLoser, Slick, PantherModern, ICE (that's the firewall, naturally), etc.

So that said, what are the names of all your other machines?

@mattyturner: Coffee varieties? That's an interesting idea.

I personally use the names of my favorite guitarists as my naming scheme - my first powerbook was slash because he was so.....metal. There's Slash, Jimi, Jimmy, Stevie, and George currently. If I had a Mac Pro, I'd name it Angus. :)

I use the LOTR naming scheme too: My old Dell Server (black, ugly and loud) is called "Sauron" while the MacMini is called "Frodo". My MacBook Pro of course is called "Arwen"

A MacPro probably would probably qualify as "Gandalf"

- Zap

I stopped naming my HDs when OS X came out. Not sure why -- I think initially OS X didn't lend itself to personalization as much as previous Mac OSes. So I've had "Macintosh HD" and "Backup Drive" for a couple years now. My desktop is a solid grey blue as well. Man, I'm boring!

Chris#2 [deleted] says:

Naming conventions I used to use:

* Characters from Megatokyo (iMac was Largo, iBook was Kimiko)
* Computers/Characters from The Transformers (desktop was Teletran1, laptop was Matrix)

Now I'm just picking at random from whatever scifi name pops into my head at the time. My iMac was renamed Galactica at the last reinstall and my new(ish) Macbook is Ulthwe.

At work we name the servers after meteorological and geological phenomena (Typhoon, Earthquake, etc)

In the past I've used characters from The Matrix (neo, trinity, morpheus, tank, mouse...) but now we uses biblical old testament prophets. The servers are typically 'J' names - Jonah, Joshua, Joel, Jeremiah etc, and the workstations are things like Malachi, Sarah, Ruth, Isaiah, Daniel and so on.

I help keep the network ticking over at edgeofmyseat.com, where all the machines are named after types of seat / chairs / things you sit on.

You have 63 characters so don't skimp. That way you can "that jackass" on the network when people browse. Or, an anagram of your name would be nice. How about "ninja man bed"? Which reminds me, I need to change my iBook to "scorch tits"...

scorch tits!!?!?!! hahahahah. That's awesome.
Yeah, i like the anagram thing. Did that for awhile, but used up all the good ones.
Lately i've been using Planets from Star Wars, but i do keep the drives that have specific functions to synonyms such as:

music -> Wurlitzer, JukeBox, Staksowaks, Toons, etc.
backup -> Clone, R2D3, MaintenanceMan, Doop, Dupe, etc.

Strange SW references, too:
Bantha, TK421, DetentionBlock, Dantooine, Endor, etc.

Can't wait to hear what you'll call it after reading all this discussion!

Why anyone would name their computers after LOTR characters (you might as well roll yourself in horse manure and try to pick up supermodels) or Math terms is absolutely beyond me. Maybe you all should all just name your computer "Workstation1203221d" and get out some.

"The folder where you put files that have no place" == Holding Folder. A "partner" to that is simply the Downloads folder. Actually, I no longer use my Holding Folder. Everything gets routed to Downloads. I sort my Downloads once a month. (HA! Who am I kidding? It's more like once every six months...)

I always name my computers based on purpose, usually drawing from literature or mythology. This machine is Hercules. It's always performing daunting tasks. (It's my work machine.) When my new MBP arrives in about a week, I'll name it Midas -- it's the machine for my website, which I dream will bring me lots of gold. (HA!)

@noreturn: i think discussing the naming conventions of computers AT ALL kind of limits your 'supermodel pick-up ability'. Let alone the source of the names.

Anyways, I've already got my supermodel... and she doesn't seem to care what my computers' names are.

Though, as long as you brought it up: how about naming machines after supermodels?

At work, where certain arbitrary and capricious restrictions on hostnames apply, I like to use famous scientists and inventors. My two old Macs at work are Tesla, and his assistant, Czito. The hateful (but powerful) Dell with Windows I'm now forced to use is dubbed Edison.

At home, I've been using machines that begin with X ever since I migrated to OS 10 - Xenon, Xanadu, etc, but I may break with that tradition when I get my new Mac Pro in May or June.

My recent machines / drives have been named Goudy, Garamond, Caslon, Cochin, Desdemona, Harrington, Hoefler, Monaco, Trajan and Anonymous. (Yes, Anonymous.)

I still have two LoTR names remaining — Aragorn and Durin — but when those machines are replaced, I'll have all typeface-based names, and I haven't even scratched the surface.

Oh, and my clutter folder was originally called 'But I Don't Want a Messy Desktop'. I shortened it to 'Messy Desktop' and so it remains.
