• The cormorant fishermen of south China use cormorant birds and lanterns to fish. They work at night and use the lanterns to attract fish to their boats. Once the fish get close to the boats the Cormorant birds dive in the water and catch the fish. A string is tied around the birds neck so they can't sallow it. They bring the fish back to the fishermen who then remove it from the birds neck.

Cormorant Fishermen at Dusk ~ Guilin ~ China ~ Photography ~ Off Camera Flash ~ Nikon ~ CLS ~Landscape

Explored

The last four days of shooting in China have been EPIC!! In an area that doesn't see a ton of sun this time of year, I just got four days of excellent shooting conditions. Including several great sunset/sunrise shoots. I was also lucky enough to have the chance to shoot a couple very old Fishermen that use Cormorant birds and lanterns to catch fish......This really is one of the most amazing places on earth.

Hand held at 1/50 sec and F8 ISO 200 with off camera flash held by an asst. on my left with warming gel. The flash was triggered using the on camera flash (dialed way down).

    Hi Dan,

Glorious photograph! I've never seen anyone photograph this area of China, and this particular activity, this well, other than Art Wolfe. And that puts you in very talented company.

    Impressive work! Take care, Doug.
