Despite Admiral Byrd's first rejections of having an artist on his Antarctic expeditions, he finally said yes to David Abbey Paige.

Info from The Ohio State University Libraries:

"Records indicate that Paige completed '100 pastels of various sizes; about 300 pencil drawings of aurura australis, and eight portraits in charcoal of the men as they appeared through the Winter Night, with their picturesque beards.' Further documentation in the Byrd files states that Paige exhibited some of the works in various galleries upon his return to the United States in the 1930s."
