Atlanta Chapter 3rd Annual Positively Art 2006 |
Cable Positive’s Atlanta Chapter raised more than $30,000 in its third-annual Positively Art fundraiser Nov. 2. Pictured at the event are Atlanta volunteers along with Cable Positive staff and the event’s honorary chair, acrobat and gymnast Matthew Cusick. In 2002, Cusick’s contract with Cirque du Soleil was terminated because he is HIV-positive. Cusick filed a discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The agency found evidence of discrimination and Cirque paid the largest settlement in history for an HIV-discrimination complaint settled with the EEOC. The story of Cusick’s courageous fight is featured in the first of a series of “Positive Voices” mini-documentaries produced by Cable Positive. At Positively Art, he spoke about the realities facing those with HIV and AIDS and also injected performance art into the event with a hand-balancing demonstration with performance partner Ken Berkeley.
