Great Mosque Ruins and Archeology

Atturaif (Turaif), a walled city within Addiriyah (Diriyah) in the central Najd region of Saudi Arabia, outside of present day Riyadh. Atturaif served as the original Saudi capital in the 18th and early 19th century. The sucess of the first Saudi state that formed here brought conflict, as an Ottoman force marched on Addiriyah in 1818. After a 6 month seige, the attackers prevailed and destroyed the city.
Atturaif was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010. Currently, a large effort is underway, (one that I am involved in as an architect) to revive the site as an open air museum, adding visitor infrastrucure, restoring some of the key historic structures, interpreting recent archeology, and reopening the site to the public.
