This is that gate ("torii") that appears so often on any publicity material about Japan. And no wonder, it is an impressive thing to behold. It sits in the sea just off the shore of Miyajima island near Hiroshima. It was built as the main approach to Itsukushima shrine.
At ebb tide it stands free of water and you can walk right up to it. At high tide, tourist boats sail underneath it.
