Dinner at DiFara’s (the real Brooklyn style pizza)

Dinner at DiFara’s (the real Brooklyn style pizza) by daltonrooney.
Dom at DiFara’s Pizza makes what is quite possibly the best pizza in the world. I say this just coming off of a three week trip to Italy, including a week in Sicily. Believe me, it’s that good.

Midwood, on Avenue J and 15th St, right near the Q station. There's often a long line, but it's well worth the wait.

I grew up right near DiFara's, on Ave I. My family still lives there and we're all mystified about how he's always in the news now. I mean, it's good pizza, but it's always burnt. It takes two hours to get a pie. And it's so far away from anything! Well, it's far away from anything except my grandma's house where you can get what are possibly the best meatballs in the universe. My grandma can kick Dom's ass when it comes to cooking. ;^)

It's good to see a picutre of him, though. He hasn't changed a bit since I was a kid, except now he's got a little grey at the temples.

Some people don't understand the beauty of what is Difara's. The time and effort he puts into each and every pie is as painstaking as the next. He makes sure you get to see how fresh and beautiful each pie is, and that he cares painstakingly over each one. Sure, once in a while you will get a burned edge, but the pies - on my goodness - they are like heaven on earth. And just witnessing the experience is zen. And that makes the pie that much tastier. That is why he is always in the news. His dedication and love of his work. The man hasn't missed a day of work in years.

Katie,
You are so right.; you hit the nail on the head!
I love how people simply stand at the counter and stare and watch intently at Dom work his magic, slowly, methodically making his pies. Putting each piece of mozzarella in the right spot. Putting his bare hands into the oven, checking the crust. Cutting the basil on at the end. I call it "going to church" because it is a Zen-like experience. People are generally pretty quiet and respectful, and for me, waiting and watching a Master Artist make his art, is part of the whole experience of going to DiFara's. Of course, nothing beats the end when you taste it!
I am convinced if this was Japan, Dominic DeMarco would be classified as a National Living Treasure.
