My favorite tree @ night

My favorite tree @ night

To end a VERY cold day with buddy Del Higgins we decided to photograph this tree while the stars were out. Del provided the light painting while he was doing his own thing and I used the flashlight from my phone for a touch of foreground light.

At the time we believe it was about 8 below zero.Using my wide angle at 11mm and f 2.8 this is a single image for 244 seconds or just over 4 minutes. I wanted to go longer but it was just to cold to be out there any longer. At least at those temps you don't have to worry about the sensor over heating.

Next time I try this I will be using a flash with several colored gels for a different effect.

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look.

Nautilus Shell

Nautilus Shell

This is the last image I took for 2011. Photographed on Christmas morning at my folks house. I have always been intrigued by these shells and decided to make a couple of images.

Thanks everyone for all the kind words through 2011. I appreciate every one.

Gettin Wet

Gettin Wet

Yeah I know I'm soakin(pun intended) my trip with Del Higgins, but Watkins Glen is that good. I keep finding photographs that I shot, re-thinking them.

The wonderful thing about Watkins Glen is if you are a monochrome fan Like Del and I are, this place does not disappoint.
This is an HDR shot but not in the traditional feeling or technique. I did blend my usual 3 shot workhorse bracket of -2 0 +2 in Photomatix Pro 4.01 in Natural + and cranked up the Detail and Micro Contrast. Put a curve on it in Lightroom and imported everything into CS5. Once I got everything in balance, I did the B+W conversion in Nik Software SilverEfex Pro 2.

I love doing B+W conversions in Lightroom, in my mind, it does a better job than Photoshop. It covers a broader range without having to do to many layers to get the same result. It's more intuitive and gets you closer to true Darkroom work. Add Silver Efex Pro 2.0 and it gets me as close to a real darkroom as I can get.

Anyway, I hope you like this one, I do.
