Wedding Dress
Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy's wedding dress worn Sept.12, 1953 when she married John F. Kennedy; displayed at JFK Library and Museum in 2003 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their wedding; probably will not be displayed again in this way because the weight of the dress is causing the fabric to tear

Apparently Jackie hated this dress. Her mother insisted she wear it, though.

Alabamanglican, that's interesting to know. Wonder what she would have preferred.

Yes! Congrates! Wonderful dress, I had no idea what it looked like. It is beautiful. But I do think Jackie had more tailored taste.

Wow, so beautiful! Do you know who designed it?
driababe (74 months ago | reply)
Oh wow! Even though it's from '53 I would've worn it at my wedding this year. Jackie O had such an amazing sense of style.
kevbeaux (73 months ago | reply)
Jackie's Dress was designed by a seamstress her mother used frequently, Ann Lowe who was an African American designer. The dress was of Ivory Silk Tafeta.

Actually. I would believe whoever said Jackie didn't like it. Her other dresses seemed to be much more streamlined. I doubt she was down with the huge circles above the hem line.
They got married in Newport RI.. not Portland unless you are talking about second marriage. I don't know where her second wedding to Onassis was but i doubt Onassis would pick Portland Maine for his wedding.
kevbeaux (58 months ago | reply)
It's well documented in several books that Jackie despised it and was pressured into it by her mother Janet Auchincloss. She didn't mind the bottom so much but hated the circles of ruffles.
You are right ayemoah, They were married at Newport. Onassis and Jackie were married on Skorpios, Greece, in his island chapel.

This dress is much more beautiful than that of the former Princess of Wales, Diana. I would REALLY LOVE to see close-ups of the veil. I've read that it was her grandmother's veil and done in rosepoint lace (whatever that is--sounds pretty though). If anyone has a decent photo of the veil I would LOVE to see it! Thank you.

when they were in the white house oleg cassini was her designer and dressmaker... however, i don't think he designed this dress. Too bad they wont be displaying it anymore. But how lucky we are that you took this photo! :)

The dress is gorgeous, one way or another...
On the topic of whether the dress was her choice or not....Dresses before her marriage got her the man, whether that was a good thing or not. I think her later choices of men, without her mom, were not as sophisticated. She did seem to inherit her mother's sense of good taste in clothing.

This is a beautiful dress but according to the book "American's Queen", Jacqueline hated this dress because it didn't flatter her figuar. Her mother had the dress made and insisted she wear it. Jacqueline didn't have much confidence in her style until after she became a Kennedy.

was very impressed by this shot. I would like to use it for the website www.vipbridal.com.ua representing my bridal shop, which is quit known in this branch. Besides dressing the brides we are busy with creating their image, so interesting pictures featuring other brides are of a great use for our activities.
