james hannington - martyr

    james hannington was an englishman who was ordained bishop of eastern equatorial africa. while pioneering a route from mombasa to uganda, he and his team of missionaries were captured and murdered by the king of buganda. his alleged last words to the soldiers who killed him were: "Go, tell Mwanga I have purchased the road to Uganda with my blood."

      there is tiny cemetary on the grounds of st. paul's cathedral. this was another one i took on alison's "history walk."
