Centered 6

Centered 6 by David M*.
I have just taken up Archery and I really like it.
Granted I have only been 3x but still, so far, its challenging and fun.

Its nice to be outside. There is a beautiful range a few miles from where I live within the South Bay in the Saratoga Mountains.
The range is like a golf course. You walk from target to target, shooting through obstacles and at 3-D targets of animals. They also have a general area where there are a lot of targets, at different ranges, all in one spot, in case you dont want to walk the course.
The club that uses the range is actually 70% hunters. And although I do not plan on actually hunting and killing animals. It should be noted that everyone who eats meat – pretty much accepts that type of killing. Not something we really think about. So I could hunt, but don’t want to.

Two types of bows out there.
Compound Bows which are high tech versions of the common bow. Have a very fast launch (upwards of 200 miles an hour) and use a whole bunch of gadgets that make it easier to hit your target. Hunters use this type of bow as it makes it that much easier.

Then there is the Traditional Bow or Recurve Bow. Nothing fancy. Just a piece of wood and one string. This is what I am using now. It is pretty clear that it is more challenging and I like that better.

The string is tied up to a certain poundage. The higher the poundage (70 lbs) the faster the arrow will fly. It gets pretty tiring pulling a heavy string back when you are not used to it.

Great composition and I like the yellows in the arrows. Thanks for the explanation, I did a little archery in high school as part of PE but don't remember much about it other than that it was fun.

Thanks Gale.
Yah, the Yellows in my arrows are nice.
You should see some of the "pros" and their arrows. Beautiful Simple Designs giving the Feathers their Identity. And their Bows. Wow. Some of them are these custom made pieces - just gorgeous.

I want to sometime! I've been wanting to learn archery for a long time now.

I'd just as soon try the compound bow as I actually would like to hunt sometime too. I've been on a no meat/fowl diet since 1997 and my deal with myself is that I won't eat meat or fowl until I hunt, kill, prepare and cook the animal myself.

It's probably a bit far from San Francisco to go regularly, but I'd love to make a trip down sometime for it. How much are the rentals and course fees?

I would actually hunt at least once. Just for the experience. I would definitely have to eat what I kill as well. But as a "Sport". Nah. I dont think I need to do it.

Well...lets cook something up.

There are no course fees. Its a public county park and the club meets there, fixes things up and has shoots. If you want to be a member of the club there is a yearly fee of $45 or so. Visits however are free. Rentals - dont exist there. If you give me some time though, the better I get to know these people, I am sure some of them could lend me some Compound Bows for you to try and play with.

A bit of club and range info.

Sounds good. I'm definitely into the compound bow as opposed to the old school ones. I went pricing them on craigslist after I commented last time, and I'll definitely buy my own, but it would be nice to try a few first to get an idea of what I really want. Where can you actually hunt in the bay area? (yes, I realize -that- would be a lot of practice away from now).

Hey, archery sounds like fun!
Im glad to hear you're having a good time down their in the south bay.

Your (David and Dav)hunting desires remind me of a recent article in the nytimes magazine a few weeks ago by m. pollan about his first 'all homemade' meal. I think its an excerpt of his latest book - Omnivoir's dilemma. He went hunting for boar in the north bay somewhere. Anyway, its a good article--defn entertaining. And he's defn. from a non-hunter perspective.

Roberta, thanks for the NY Times link. Excellent article.

I'd been thinking I'd hunt rabbit whenever I felt I'd achieved the ability, but now I'll consider the NoCal feral pig as well...

To read the rest of this archive article, upgrade to TimesSelect or purchase as a single article....is the message I got when I clicked on there.

The most recent Boar Hunting story I did hear however was how much of a Pest it is to kill a boar and then bring it back to your car. Those guys can weigh upwards of 200 Lbs.

Thanks Farl
It is a nice hobby.

Dav
We gotta have a hunting knife with us. For when we do shoot the Boar, he may not be dead yet, and then, we need to Slit the throat.

Actually the full article is also here:

chefann.com/blog/?p=240

It seems the NY Times site archived it sometime yesterday (after I read it on their site, nice timing) but I found this other blog with a copy when I searched for a quote from it later. I also saved a copy on my hard drive.

The boar in the article weighed as much as the shooter! There's two of us though. we can do it, being the mighty hunters we are ;)

And yeah, we'll need the hunting knife even for a rabbit...

After reading that it becomes completely apparent that we will need to learn two things before we go out and hunt.
1) Sign language
and
2) Meditation
