Ah, one of London's greatest assets are its parks, and several of them, in this case Richmond Park, have deer populations. Rutting season is October-early November and the deer get pretty active, bellowing and clashing antlers, so you don't really want to get close, but by now it's pretty safe. On a misty day at dawn, with the deer breathing clouds into the air and their antlers covered in bracken and ferns it really does feel quite primeval.

Faved! Do they just have red deer there or other types as well?

  13. sixbysixtasy (18 months ago | reply)

A mix of red and fallow, though I think the fallow are a bit shyer (and you occasionally get a white one, which is great!). There are over 600 in the park in total.

Cool. We have a similar park north of Copenhagen with red, fallow and sika. I think about 2000 deer in all during the summer (obviously less in winter because many are shot to keep a stable population). My experience with fallow deer is that they are the least shy however. They have better eyesight than red and therefore are less jumpy. When they are grouped together, the red deer are less easily scared because they can feel that the fallow deer are calm.

My bad! I guess I was lucky to get closer to the reds then;-) I think, to be fair, that all park deer are pretty relaxed compared to wild deer.

Yes, you are most likely correct. What lens was this taken with? I am curious as to how close you were. Perspective wise it looks like a standard lens, in which case you were extremely close.

150mm. Don't think I could have got much closer without frightening them off.

Yes, quite, and barely anyone acknowledging the source, so thanks for doing so. I have a bit of a problem with tumblr for exactly that reason.

Such a great shot. An image seen on tumblr means nothing to anyone, it would seem. In one eye, out the other and on to the next one as quickly as possible.
