Morris Island |
Morris Island was the key to the whole
Confederate defense of Charleston in
1863. From Morris Island Union forces
would make their grand and futile
assault on Battery Wagner - as
memorialized in the 1989 movie
"Glory." And it was from
Morris Island that the Union forces
would position their heavy artillery
zeroed in on Fort Sumter and the City of
Charleston. The first African-American
Medal of Honor winner earned his
accolade on Morris Island. Clara Barton
was here too. Now we have the chance to
help save this historic ground.
In support of the State of South
Carolina, the City of Charleston, and
the Trust for Public Land, the Civil War
Preservation Trust conducted a
preservation campaign to save 117 acres
of historic Morris Island, SC.
