Aldie: 1st Massachusetts Monument
![]() Battle of Aldie
June 17, 1863 View of the 1st Massachusetts monument on the Aldie battlefield. This monument is placed along the Snickersville Turnpike and is where the 1st Mass ran into a deadly trap set by Confederate cavalrymen looking to stop Union patrols. CWPT has saved 448 acres of the Aldie battlefield in Virginia. Stuart’s cavalry screened the Confederate infantry as it marched north behind the sheltering Blue Ridge. The pursuing Federals of Kilpatrick’s brigade, in the advance of Gregg’s division, encountered Munford’s troopers near the village of Aldie, resulting in four hours of stubborn fighting. Both sides made mounted assaults by regiments and squadrons. Kilpatrick was reinforced in the afternoon, and Munford withdrew toward Middleburg. www.civilwar.org Would you like to comment?Sign up for a free account, or sign in (if you're already a member). |
