The Elevated Acre at 55 Water Street is a "privately owned public space" in lower Manhattan that I had a major role in designing during my time at Rogers Marvel Architects.

In 1999, RMA won a design competition to renovate the space, organized by theMunicipal Arts Society.

It officially opened on October 19th, 2005.

See this New York Times article about the re-dedication of the plaza and this skyscraper description page of the surrounding building tower.

Also, this other New York Times article describes how developers score big with these types of public/private spaces, and it describes Water Street as "one of the best examples of a rehabilitated public space".

You can find an online list by neighborhood of these spaces in the recently released book "Privately Owned Public Space : The New York City Experience".
