I like the scale of these shots... big rivers of ice, with little people. I also love the fact that most of the people seem to be dressed in their "Sunday best", almost like a stroll on a glacier is just like a stroll downtown... only it's colder and one must carry a stick.

It's not up on The Commons (yet!) but this photo beautifully demonstrates your point about people mountain-climbing in their best duds!

It does! But what's up with the guy in front? Is he really missing a leg? That would be a challenging climb.
zyrcster (45 months ago )
ohh yes! i love this gallery. the scale with people in every photo really makes this ace.
would if i could fave this one. ;-)
Lú_ (45 months ago )
That's really impressive to find so much on this theme in the Commons! Now you just need a matching gallery of Flickr Members on Glaciers :)
sgilliamh (45 months ago )
Brenda, this is an awesome gallery! I could get to be a fan of glaciers as I already am of rocks and water. The historical photos are wonderful. Let's hope we are not commenting "RIP Glaciers" when we're in our nineties...

i went to rohtang glacier in manali, india.your photographs took me back to 1993.the pure dry cold on glaciers is a reminder to fight global warming to save our unique planet one and only one of it's kind within reach of earthlings ,with no other in reach or sight which can sustain life leave aside in such diverse forms as on our home planet earth.
