Jupiter and the Moon 10 Aug 05

Two of Jupiters moons are visible in larger image
Jupiter and the Moon 10 Aug 05 by Brenda Anderson.
Tonight, it was Jupiter that looked closest to the moon. The moon is in the constellation Virgo, with a right ascension of 12h54m. Jupiter is at a right ascension of 12h55m.

Compare to 2 nights ago, when Venus was "closest" to the moon.

How did you calculate the right ascension?

Nice! I like how you can see both the bright and shoadowed part of the moon!

Wow... this is an awesome shot, Brenda. I was trying to get a shot of this tonight, but the moon kept popping in and out of the clouds. Soon as I'd get my camera ready for the shot it would go back behind the clouds. I finally gave up.

You did a great job. This shot is very welcome on the Lunatics group... www.flickr.com/groups/lunatics_

Nice shot!
Tonight, it is cloudy so I cannot see the moon and stars.

When you take a shot of Perseid meteor, please add Tag "Perseid2005".

Being used to the northern hemisphere perspective it took me a while to realise that this was the view from the right way up!

Not only have you captured Jupiter but looking at the largest view I think you have also captured three of its moons from bottom to top these are Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto while Io was being eclipsed by the planet. The fourth object is a star in Virgo.

Great shot

Thanks for sharing your view of Jupiter and the moon in your comments Brenda. It is interesting how the angle differs: Jupiter Teases Moon 8:30pm HST Aug. 9th 2005 --Island of Hawaii
