One day in June 2008, my friends were hanging out at a bar near the University of Arizona campus. A young, shirtless guy approached us with a tiny kitten huddled in his shirt and asked if any of us were interested in taking care of her. One friend volunteered, but she already owned a cat and a dog. I ended up taking the kitten in.

My graduate student apartment didn't allow pets, so I asked friends and co-workers if they were interested in adopting her, but nothing panned out. Eventually, I moved and now I live with a kitten named Wesley.
