Orcas Island is heavily populated with deer but I had forgotten how many there were. As I drove around the island on Friday this was the first one I encountered. I stopped to take a few snaps, thinking how cool it was to see one. Little did I know that over the next couple of hours I would see over 20 more. And I really wasn't even looking for them.
The deer are not tame but are not super skittish. So this one let me drive alongside her while she grazed along a side road. However, once I stopped the car she became more wary.
When driving around the island, if you pay attention, you'll often notice that along with the herd of grazing cows or horses in the pastures there are often half a dozen deer.
This abundance of deer is recognized from one end of the island to the other by places named Deer Harbor, Doe Bay, and Buck Mountain, to name a few.
I encountered some very oddly marked deer and in talking with a local guy found there are some theories about them. There are some albino deer on the island - I did not see one - but they think some of the offspring of the albinos with "regular" deer produce those with the odd markings.

Oh! I love deer. They are such quiet,
graceful, majestic creatures.
I've never been to Orcas Island if you can
believe it. I've lived in the Puget Sound
area most of my life. I feel like a
"fraud". HAAAAH!

go to the hot springs :)

Jackie: Put it on your list! I will say
however you have to be able to just chillax
and rely totally on yourself. The
"city" of Eastsound has maybe 20 or
30 businesses. Many of which have posted
hours of 10-6, for instance, but at 11:00
there's still not a sign of life... ;-) Or
there's always the "resort"
experience at Rosario. But it's a beautiful
place and if you like deer you can hardly
*not* see them.
Trick: I can't say I've ever been in the
hot springs either... but, speaking of
banana pancakes - some of the best I've ever
had there.... at least about 10 years ago.

Oh, I can TOTALLY *chillax* (hah! great
word!). In fact, I am the QUEEN of relaxin',
man. (My b/f, on the other hand, would be
chompin' at the bit to 'do stuff', I
think...)
