One last time in Nara

The Lonely Planet marks this as the largest wooden structure in the world. The present structure, rebuilt in 1709, is two-thirds of the size of the original. The Buddha statue inside is one of the largest bronze figures in the world (437 tonnes of bronze, 130kg of gold). Awe-inspiring stuff.

Nara, Deer

There are over a thousand deer in Nara, which in pre-Buddhist times were thought to be messengers of the gods. Now they're National Treasures. Most shied away from my camera, this one simply farted.

One of these fierce looking figures sat on either side of the hall. Two large Buddhas then flanked the largest Buddha in the centre of the hall.
