One last time in NaraThe Lonely Planet marks this as the largest wooden structure in the world. The present structure, rebuilt in 1709, is two-thirds of the size of the original. The Buddha statue inside is one of the largest bronze figures in the world (437 tonnes of bronze, 130kg of gold). Awe-inspiring stuff.
Uploaded on Jul 28, 2007 Nara, DeerThere are over a thousand deer in Nara, which in pre-Buddhist times were thought to be messengers of the gods. Now they're National Treasures. Most shied away from my camera, this one simply farted.
