The problem with YYZ is that it is literally filled with homeless people. I feel bad for both the human and the dog because they both should be living in better circumstances. Some may call my comment cruel but it is not intended to be. Rather, it is a reaction to an all too common sight on the streets of YYZ. This man may be capable of better for himself yet he may be choosing to live this way for some reason and sadly has to take that poor dog down a long dark and lonely road with him.

nice show. it's an intentional pose to get money. and judging by the oblivious fawning from everyone here, it works pretty well. makes a good picture, though.

I found this on digg, and did a bit of googling to find this:

www.petsofhomeless.org/Issue%203.htm

If that is all true, then how amazing that a photograph of a random homeless guy could make such an impact. Great work.

Remarkable photo. I'm not a sensitive man at all but this picture nearly drew a tear to my eye. Perhaps it's because of my relationship with my own dog. Dogs are a mans best friend.

Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

Lived near Queen St. for a few years and saw this guy a lot. He is "real" and this shot isn't posed. The good news is that he seems to have some resources at times with updated winter clothing etc.. He treats the dog well, from what we could tell. Talked to him a couple times and he seems to take it all in stride.

Life is hard, and even though it is tough to realize that millions of people IN AMERICA today are just one pay check away from living on the streets. We should no longer judge homeless people, but get to know them and spend time with them. Many just have had some bad luck. I mean, I know it is a movie but has anyone see the Pursuit of Happyness? Hardworking people can be homeless. The sad thing is that the only help out there many times requires things that are easily lost or stolen while on the streets and getting through the bureaucratic hoops to get items such as your ID with out a birth certificate can be a long process. This picture is beautiful, I love dogs and I think many of us have felt the comfort they can bring.

I see him a lot on my way to work here in Toronto. I've been here for six years or so and have seen him a few times over the course of it. It's the saddest damn thing. I've given him money and a sandwich for once. I feel sorry for that dog. I saw a man give him lunch and a bag of dogfood once.

The really sad thing you guys are missing is that more and more towns and counties are passing laws on illegal camping. This man and his dog will soon be removed and housed separately, then of course executed...

All with your tax dollars. So you not only didnt help them, you killed them.

Congrats, hope you sleep well.

I used to look for this man when I went downtown on a weekend to do some window shopping - i was...about 17 or so, wasnt working and had little money myself.

I had purchased a pizza slice from pizza pizza and had about $2 left to my name. I was about to take a bite of it when I saw the man and his dog. Seeing the love between him and his pooch really touched my heart and in doing so i gave him my slice and told him i hoped he and his pooched like pizza.

We ended up talking for a bit, that pooch is so loveable!

(i ended up buying myself a double cheeseburger to eat and sneaking on the subway home due to lack of funds)

after that i would always stop to say hello if i saw him and I told others who I knew that ventured downtown that he was one of the nicest guys out there and not to be quick to judge him.

Its nice to know that him and his family are in touch!

Good way to start of 2009!
