The boy from a good family says:

why do you use samsung in vertical position? and for what purposes the second monitor is using?

Crouching Donkey  Pro User  says:

Well, it saves space to have it vertical, but also good for working on Word documents, where portrait view is easier to work with.

I usually have my messenger/Skype apps open on the Samsung, which leaves plenty of room on my iMac screen for Photoshop, web browsing etc.

The iMac is great. It runs even faster on Leopard. I can't fault it really, that is until a newer, thinner, faster, lighter, more-power-efficient model comes along! Hehe!

Hi Anthony! I didn't know you Flickr'd too?! Yeah, I'm somewhat of a gadget whore.

The iPhone is taking a temporary leave of absence, ie it's died. I've asked Wendy to try and exchange it for me at an Apple Store in the UK.

This one:

It looked so much better than the new one!

Hi Henrik. Yeah, the old one does look better than the new one, I agree. But, the new one is a proper mouse pad, and works much better. The mouse can 'read' it better, and it glides more smoothly.

I'm on the look-out for a new mouse pad for myself. What's your called?
I'm also thinking about ordering a VX Revolution myself - is it a good mouse?
How does those two work together? Smoothless?

Crouching Donkey  Pro User  says:

The new mouse pad is made by a company called Elecom. But many companies make special pads for laser mice.

The VX is a great mouse, yes. I'd highly recommend it to anyone! But do try it for size first. If you have large hands, the MX might be a better choice.

I´m a graphic designer, and I´m getting this in my office, but I´m seriously worried how the screen wil work out. I´ll use it with a secondary screen, a classic lcd, so I wonder how the two will look together, and which will be most accurate to reproduce colors and hues. I see you have a similar set-up, how do they work together? Besides, the mirror effect from the imac worries me.

view profile

Crouching Donkey  Pro User  says:

Well, as far as the glossy screen goes, if you have a window, or a source of light behind you, then it could be a problem. I'm not sure what to suggest except blinds!

I don't use my secondary screen all the time. And when I do, it's just for menus, messenger boxes, etc, so faithful colour reproduction isn't an issue. I have tried to get it as close to the iMac screen as possible, but the Samsung screen is still slightly too blue. I guess it would depend on your secondary LCD monitor. Plus you can get those monitor calibration tools to match up your screens. I don't know how well they work. I just know they exist.

Good luck with your setup, and post some pics!

Crouching Donkey  Pro User  says:

Thanks skyeandy1!

If it's a MacBook you have, then replacing the HD is incredibly easy. It's just a small matter of removing a few screws, and sliding the existing HD out. Have a look at the guides at ifixit.com for further info.

Good luck! :-)

how do you get the monitor to display sideways?
Posted 16 months ago. ( permalink )

applec2400 says:

agreed with philip24fan?

Does Leopard/the iMac have the capability out of the box? I figured it would be a PC driver only thing. I would like to have a vertical monitor for photo editing but passed them buy figuring it wouldn't work.
Posted 16 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

Crouching Donkey  Pro User  says:

Hi philip24fan and applec2400!

The short answer yes!

The long answer:
Tiger/Leopard and the iMac are able to display on an extra monitor, right out of the box. Once you've plugged your external monitor in, just go into System Preferences > Display > Arrangement, to fine tune the positioning of the external monitor in relation to your iMac. By positioning, I mean you could have the second monitor mounted on the left of your iMac, or even above if you so wish. Fine tuning it allows documents/windows/images to be dragged from one screen to the other fairly seamlessly. But, because of screen differences in terms of quality, resolution, brightness and colour, it'll be difficult to get an exact match.

applec2400 says:

Yes, but how do you do it vertically? Because I've never seen the option to rotate the output image.
Posted 16 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

Crouching Donkey  Pro User  says:

Ah ok. The option only shows up in a window on the external monitor, once it's plugged in. You have options to keep it 'Standard', rotate 90°, 180°, or 270°.

hi, do you do specific work on all this kit or is it just for pleasure? and how do you feel about leopard over Tiger now?? I always wanted to know why creative business still use Tiger over Leopard?? i cant make my mind up to use Tiger or Leopard, but seeing Leopard on your kit makes it look more appealing...

Crouching Donkey  Pro User  says:

Hi Stuart,

It's mostly for pleasure; I use it for processing photos on Photoshop, encoding videos into various formats. Though sometimes I use it for designing teaching material.

I'm not sure why businesses would use Tiger over Leopard, but I can bet budget has something to do with it. Also perhaps compatibility with existing software?! Although software developed for Tiger can still run on Leopard, it's probably optimised for Tiger?! I'm just guessing. And that old chesnut, 'If it ain't broke, why fix it?!'

Tiger or Leopard? Well, I'd recommend Leopard for any Intel Mac. I've found that my iMac runs a tad faster on Leopard. Not that it crashed a great deal on Tiger, but it crashes even less on Leopard. If you do opt for Leopard, I'd recommend a full install rather than an upgrade. If you're happy enough with Tiger, then there is the option of waiting for Snow Leopard, which is due sometime around June 2009?!
