Saturday morning breakfast with their dad.

This was taken earlier in 2007. Over the last few weeks of 2007 I am going to go through some shots I took earlier in the year to see if there are any I like better the second time around.

I was going to say the diner on Irving just west of Ashland and Biasetti's, but I see that Andy located it first on the previous photo.

I went there for the first and only time a few years ago even though I grew up just west of there and passed by it hundreds of times.

Procedural question: did you ask permission from the father before you took the picture?

    5. The New No. 2 (55 months ago | reply)

Thanks for all the comments. It's always appreciated.

In response to redryderent, I didn't ask permission from anybody. This shot is really quite out of character for me considering that a) it has people in it b) it has people who are physically quite close to me and c) 3 of those people are children. This was clearly one time where I felt so strongly about capturing what was unfolding in front of me that I wouldn't have gotten the shot if I had asked first. I think I'm going to try and approach situations a bit more like this in the future.

I love your title (and shot)

I ask because those situations can be awkward. I took a series of crowd photos at the Pitchfork Music Festival last year, and the year prior, and definitely got some stern looks from the subjects (even though I was shooting on a 70-300mm lens!)

They can be awkward for the photographer and the subject. I think it is a major hurdle people have to be able to overcome if they want to be really serious about photography and I'll be the first to admit that I'm not there yet. One of my new year resolutions is going to be to shoot more people shots which means that I had better become a bit more comfortable at taking the shots I want, and putting the subjects at ease.

Excesive brightness spoils an otherwise great photograph... but guess it's a mather of personal preference.

While the picture itself is not that great, I am saving it for the decent 'documentary factor', seems one of these everyday thing you just frozen in time at the right moment with those kids looking at whatever that was.

Oh, I think this is more than just an image of kids. I've been looking at it for a while and I've decided I like the bright, clean look of it. Love the candid feel and the expressions on the kids' faces. It's the central figure that bothers me ... he seems so disengaged. As the darkest figure, he draws the eye and becomes the focal point of the photograph, but doesn't really interest me the way the other figures do. He just doesn't seem to fit. Good for you for trying this type of shot, though. Look forward to seeing more street photography from you.

the girl has a great expression, rest of the photo is just random pic of kids, dad, pipe out of his head, too bright etc, all you can get when you are trying to sneak a shot with your pocket camera.
