Sea Stacks Sunrise Surprise

Sea Stacks Sunrise Surprise

Even cloudless skies for a sunrise can offer up a surprise or two. I wasn't expecting these sunrise pastels.

Face Rock Park Overlook

Face Rock Park Overlook

For the record, I am 5/5 with cloudless clear sky sunsets/sunrises in Bandon. I get to go there once a month for work, so I am hoping that one of these times I will get an epic sunset. The silver lining is that each time I go there, I hone in on creative angles and get new ideas to shoot. So when I do get my perfect sunset/sunrise, I should have a pretty good shot at taking full advantage of the opportunity.

By the way, the Gorse Bush yellows are starting to bloom everywhere down there, and I suspect that they should be at peak bloom in the next few weeks. HWY38 from Reedsport to the I-5 is looking very promising as well, with old barns, crotchety bridges, gnarled trees, and open meadows. As soon as spring hits in a few months, this will be a great spot to check out.

Coquille Sunset

Coquille Sunset

An image I captured during sunset in Bandon. This is a single image exposure, so I am really happy with the results. I love the way the kelp in the foreground is lit up by the sun!

Precarious Landing

Precarious Landing

I was shooting at Cape Perpetua a few days ago and ran into Dax McMillan. After talking for a while he was telling me about a spot that he really wanted to shoot, but he needed help having his gear handed down to him. So I started to follow him up to his spot. We were clamoring on a 55 degree muddy slope with loose rocks. One slip would have dropped us into the chasm you can see in this picture. Dax kept on pushing ahead and I felt the pressure to keep up, but fear and common sense got the better of me. I turned around, and started heading back. If my wife even knew the risks I would have taken, she would have kicked my butt. I took 3 shots from a safer spot and used luminosity masks to merge the images together. The crashing waves in the far distance add a distinct halo over the rocks.

Perpetua Motion

Perpetua Motion

I had a few scary moments shooting sunset at Perpetua the other day. I arrived a few hours before sunset and spent 30 minutes watching the waves crash to identify any sneaker waves because the ocean was looking very aggressive. After my confidence increased, I placed all of my camera gear on dry rocks and ventured out to Thor's Well to figure out my composition. I don't recall how it happened, but the next thing I knew I was on my back with waves crashing around me. It's a good thing I didn't have my gear with me. I changed clothing and ventured out again, only to get chased off by an angry surge of crashing water. I was pretty spooked, so I opted to just shoot the shore line from a safe distance. All this drama and the sunset was average.
