I've been meaning to post this up for a while now. About a month ago I nearly completed my restoration of my '64 Schwinn Cycle Truck. I still need to do something in terms of the original decals, and possibly some other pinstriping. I also have a black powdercoated basket (same size) on the way. Thanks to my friends at Wald for a few hard-to-find parts.
Here's a photo of what it looked like back in 2004.
Adam A., Dapper Lad Cycles, boxspring, pedals, and 39 other people added this photo to their favorites.

I love it. Nice job on the restoration! I am highly in favor of pinstriping. Or even boxlining, if you're feeling fancy.

thanks guys!
Adam- box lining was exactly what I had in mind. Gold with a touch of red.

How did you come across this bike, and what was involved with the restoration? Do you have a blog posting or something, where I can read more?

Dapper Lad- these bikes are pretty hard to come by, especially ones in fairly good shape because they were put through so much heavy usage as utility bikes back in their day. I searched and waited for about 2 years until I found one that was in decent shape (through a ebay listing for an estate auction), and the owner didn't really know what it was they had; so I got it shipped to me all disassembled in a crate. My restoration involved restoring the wheelset, hammering out the dents in the fenders, reconditioning and repacking all cups, cones and bearings, tracking down a few stray parts (I chose not to reinstall the original front kickstand), and finally a full powdercoat finish. All I have left to do is figure out what to do with the original decals (which will need to be micro-set onto the powdercoat or they won't stick).
When it really comes down to it, I'm not a restoration purist. I'm more about reconditioning bikes, making them look great again, and then actually using them... so I'm not as concerned about making sure all the parts are original, or even intact. This bike is an excellent grocery-getter and all around hauler, and I intend to use it as such... not hang it on the wall like some folks might with a classic bicycle.
BTW, Worksman still makes factory bikes that are based on this design... they just don't look quite as cool because they're, well... new.

this should go directly to the smithsonian....or there is a new bike museum in tennessee somewhere - but this of course would defeat the purpose of the joy received from just gazing at this beauty - great work ! !

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!
Isaac - you'll be happy to know, I use my 46x16 bag with it everytime I pedal to the grocery.
Mike - you should stop by and take it for a beer run sometime.

awesome! So, do I get a free t-shirt now, or something? :)
Dapper Lad Cycles 60 months ago | reply
I'm afraid I don't have "free t-shirt" executive privileges. I'm just a contributing photo blogger. I did however credit you in the post, and set a link back to your cycle truck set. Thanks for sharing such a fantastic restoration project.
