What does this symbol mean?
My mom sent me this scan along with a fascinating story. What does it mean?
"The attached page is from your 4th great grandparents' Bible, Peter Apperson (1812-1865) and Malinda Edwards Apperson (1821-1903).
The 'AMRC' in the middle of the symbol is synonymous with AMORC (Ancient Mystical Order Rosæ Crucis), also called the Rosicrucian Order. No one has ever been able to figure out the rest of the symbol.
The story goes that, during the Civil War, Peter and Malinda's home was about to be taken over by Confederates. They were Union sympathizers. During the rout, the commanding officer took the Bible, opened it (most likely looking for money) and saw the symbol. He not only ordered his men out, but placed a guard on the place until his regiment moved on.
Yep, they were Rosicrucians. Most likely all the way back to when the family first came to Virgina in the 1600s. They were educated businessmen with a long history of psychic abilities and interests. There are a couple of seventh sons of seventh sons in the line, a fact well documented and, more importantly, discussed proudly. This is where the Masons come from, also.
If you can figure the rest of the symbol out, you're a better man than I am, Gunga Din. I tried for years, placing it in historical context, all the alleys I could find, consulted the Rosicurcians even."
