This is the last of the batch of shots from Backwell lake on Saturday. I took many shots of gulls in flight and this was the one I liked the most. Tomorrow we shall move onto the3rd and final stop on Saturday's mystery tour photo shoot

@Sadferret Thanks for the fav, I didn't think you were so keen on wildlife shots. I've some horribly orange sunset ones to come in a few days time, which I'm afraid you won't like. For tomorrow though, something completely different.

I was stood still, if I'd moved a single step in any direction I'd have stood on some bird or other, see the car+birds shot a few shots ago. I just dialled in a fast shutter speed and caught it as it flew by. Not that hard as gulls mostly fly fairly slowly.

Pretty sharp for a fly by job....and not a lot of depth of field at play...how did you manage that? Or were twent others all blurred? :-)

@turboman2002 Most of the shots were pretty sharply focussed (less than 10% duds). Gulls fly slowly enough for the autofocus to work OK. For slow birds like this it's just a case of dial in a fairly fast shutter speed then try and find a shot that gives you an uncluttered background and with sun somewhere behind you. The bit of good fortune was the kids from a few photos back throwing bits of bread to the birds, if they hadn't been doing that most of the birds would have just been sat around looking bored.

@Andy100 The background is all important to this. Most of the other shots I got they were against a dull grey sky or only partially against the trees so that the gulls didn't stand out as well. I do like the red dangly legs too.

@sadferret bokeh is another term for Depth of Field, another words Nuno was saying the background is nice and blurry.

@~Dezz~ Thank you. I love my 20D, couldn't imagine life without it now. Spot metering and some sort of automagic sensor cleaner would both be nice to haves (especially the sensor cleaner) but otherwise it does everything that I need in a camera. The body isn't the whole deal of course, get as good a set of lenses to go with it as your budget will allow.

@srini g2003 No effects used. No HDR. Photoshop elements was used to crop and a little contrast/saturation tweaking, but precious little. Everything else is as it came off the camera.
