1960's view from Craigneith Castle looking south

1960's view from Craigneith Castle looking south

This view was taken from Craigneith Castle and looks south upon the site of the former Calderwood Castle, and beyond to Calderwood Linn deep in the valley. This view is very similar to what one would have seen from the southern balconies of Calderwoo dCastle when it stood. What most don't realise at all now is how open Calderwood Glen and the surrounding landscape was in the past... There were many grand vistas and viewpoints which rivalled those to be found in many much more renowned and celebrated designed/natural landscapes. First we have thi view, and the counter view seen from the Falls themselves. The mausoleum would have been visible to, and another counter view of Craigneith from the Mausoleum. Standing at Woodhead Lodge (rough position of Nithsdale/Brncumhall Underpass, one would have looked downhill directly east to the front face of Calderwood Castle in the Distance, and Craigneith beyond. Craigneith was angled in such a way, that its backface and couryard garden were seen from the sweeping landscape visible from the rough site of the Kilbryde Arms today. Standing at Woodhead Lodge upon the former Beech Avenue, now for most part the linear stretch of St Leonards road running from the bus stop there north to the 'big footbridge bridge' nwhere the old road then veers uphill as a path and is still lined by the large Beech Trees. Standing at Woodhead and looking directly north one can still realise that the road was lined straight as a die, to line up with peak Meikle Binn on the Campsies!
