Crocheted Hyperbolic Plane

This is so cool! I used a small hook and a cotton/synthetic blend with a little shine to it.

It is cool! I like making things like this. But I'm always wondering what to do with 'em - display it as a sculpture on the mantel, hang it like a mobile, pin it in my hair...?

I have it sitting around... I have draped it across a sweater thinking about making an edge or flower detail using this technique. But, it is just fun to have something in yarn they used to have to model in geometry honors classes painstakingly in PAPER, if you can imagine. It's a way of 'knowing' that shape not just by sight but by feel.

Okay, I'm impressed...both by the finished product and your comment about geometry honors classes...probably looks much better in yarn than it did in paper, though!

I love the texture and the beautiful color you used. It would make a great centerpiece on a table accented by silk flowers or potpourri maybe.
      Great work!

You should try one, they're fun to make and you'll never ever be confused about that ruffle on a sweater again. :)

I think, in a light weight, it would be pretty trailing down the front of something...

      I'm enchanted by these forms!

Have you see the Coral Reef installations using hyperbolic planes?

My fascination grows, ahem, exponentially as I discover the marvelous interpretations of this form and some of the amazing
      coral reef projects
that have evolved from the act of
      one person
first creating a hyperbolic plane in the medium of crochet as a way of explaining it mathematically.

      Fascinating.

Yes, those Coral Reef crochet planes are amazing.

I want to use it to create flowing lace, also.
